Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Fort Wayne, Indiana!
Allen County’s Fort Wayne gets its name from General Anthony “Mad Anthony” Wayne, who in 1812 built a fort at the confluence of three rivers -- the St. Joseph, St. Mary’s and Maumee -- and whose Revolutionary War exploits secured the Northwest Territory from encroaching Europeans. A full-scale replica of Wayne’s fort now stands near Headwaters Park, site of the annual Three Rivers Festival. Once known as Summit City, Fort Wayne stands at the highest point along the Wabash and Erie canals, constructed in the early 1800s to facilitate trade. Fort Wayne attractions include The Lincoln Museum, stemming from when city movers and shakers founded The Lincoln National Life Insurance Company in 1905, asking Lincoln’s only surviving son, Robert Todd Lincoln, for a photo to use on its letterhead. The museum now boasts the world’s largest collection of Honest Abe memorabilia including a rare signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. Other Fort Wayne attractions range from the Fort Wayne Museum of Art to the burial place for John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, with a festival in his honor staged each September. Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory provides an oasis downtown, and Fort Wayne’s Children’s Zoo ranks as one of the nation’s finest natural habitat animal parks with the world’s only Endangered Species Carousel. Night baseball was launched in Fort Wayne, also home of the National Basketball Association. Shoppers flock to Jefferson Pointe Shopping Center, a Mediterranean-style open-air lifestyle center, and to Glenbrook Square, Indiana’s largest retail destination, with 175 specialty shops and three department stores including L.S. Ayres. Lodging in Fort Wayne, accommodating conventions of up to 10,000 delegates, includes more than 4,500 rooms, from hotels and motels to bed and breakfasts.
